Tractors & Diggers

Ride-on tractors, diggers and work vehicles

Working buckets, detachable trailers and lever steering. The play pattern is different from a car, and so is the spec that matters most.

Work vehicles are a different purchase from cars, and the reason is simple: the play is in the attachment, not the driving. A child with a tractor and a trailer spends most of their time loading and unloading the trailer. A child with an excavator spends it digging. The drivetrain matters less here than in any other category on the site, and the bucket matters more.

How it divides

Tractors, loaders and diggers

Tractors with trailers are the most-bought and the most used. The trailer detaches, holds actual objects, and turns the vehicle into a tool rather than a ride. Most are 12V with a 66 lb limit, and the John Deere license carries a real premium. See best ride-on tractors.

Front loaders add a bucket on a lever at the front. The bucket is the entire point and the thing to check: on the good ones it lifts a genuine load of gravel or sand; on the cheap ones it is a molded scoop that will not hold anything. Peg Perego and Kid Trax both do these properly.

Excavators and backhoes are the most interesting machines here. A sit-and-spin excavator with a rear digging arm is a different toy entirely — the child parks it and operates the arm, which holds attention far longer than driving in circles does. The licensed JCB models in our registry convert between excavator, bulldozer and backhoe. See best ride-on excavators and diggers.

Peg Perego

Why Peg Perego dominates this category, and the catch

Peg Perego is an Italian manufacturer with the John Deere and Case IH licenses, and their tractors are the best-built vehicles in this category by a clear margin. The frames survive multiple children, the parts are stocked for years, and the resale value holds in a way nothing generic does. The Gator XUV publishes a 130 lb limit across two seats, which is the highest of any 12V vehicle in our registry.

The catch is disclosure. Peg Perego publishes almost none of the nine specifications we track. Across the five Peg Perego vehicles in our registry, the typical listing gives a voltage, a weight limit and an age range, and nothing else — no top speed, no run time, no charge time, no amp-hour capacity. On the Farm Power model, eight of the nine fields are blank.

That is genuinely frustrating and we print it as it is, with each missing row marked not stated by maker. You are buying the brand’s reputation and the parts channel rather than a documented specification, and that is a legitimate choice — but it should be a knowing one. The head-to-head is on Power Wheels vs Peg Perego, and the full brand roundup is on best Peg Perego ride-ons.

What to buy first

Where to start

Under three: a 6V mini tractor at 1.5 mph, or a 6V front loader with a working bucket. Three to six: a 12V tractor with a detachable trailer, or a licensed JCB excavator if digging is the draw. Six and up: a 24V excavator or a Gator-style two-seat utility vehicle, which starts to overlap with the UTV category.

The mistake

The error buyers make here

Buying a tractor with a molded, non-functional bucket. A loader whose bucket does not actually lift is a car with a decoration on the front, and children work that out within a day. Read the listing for the words “working” or “operates” against the bucket or arm, and if it only says “features”, assume it is cosmetic.

The second error, specific to this category, is forgetting that a trailer load counts against the weight limit. A 66 lb limit with a child at 50 lb leaves 16 lb for whatever goes in the trailer, which is less sand than you would think.
