#ad disclosure

Scores are our own editorial ratings against the published rubric on how we pick. They are not customer ratings and they are not Amazon’s.

Tractors are bought for the wrong reason and kept for the right one. Parents buy the tractor; children keep using it because of the trailer. A child with a detachable trailer spends their afternoon loading and unloading it, which outlasts the novelty of driving by a long way.

The attachment

Check it actually works

The trailer. Does it detach, and does it hold anything? A trailer that detaches turns the vehicle into a tool. Every tractor pick here has one.

The loader bucket. Read the listing for “working” or “operates”. If it only says “features a front loader”, assume cosmetic. Peg Perego and Kid Trax do these properly; the cheap ones are molded scoops that will not hold gravel.

The load, against the weight limit. A 66 lb limit with a 50 lb child leaves 16 lb for whatever goes in the trailer. That is less sand than a child will want to carry. See weight limits.

Peg Perego

The brand trade-off in this category

Peg Perego has the John Deere license and makes the best-built tractors here by a clear margin: Italian manufacture, frames that survive multiple children, parts stocked for years, and resale value that holds. Three of the seven picks on this page are theirs.

They also publish almost nothing. Across the Peg Perego vehicles in our registry a typical listing gives a voltage, a weight limit and an age range and stops — no top speed, no run time, no charge time, no amp-hour capacity. On one model, eight of the nine fields are blank.

We print those gaps as not stated by maker rather than filling them in. Buying a Peg Perego means buying the brand’s build and parts channel rather than a documented specification, which is a legitimate choice but should be a knowing one. See best Peg Perego ride-ons and Power Wheels vs Peg Perego.

Steering

Wheel or levers

Nearly all of these steer on a wheel. One picks does not: a zero-turn mower with twin levers, which is how the real machine works. It takes practice at the bottom of its stated 3-7 range and is genuinely more interesting once mastered — and it mimics the machine that is probably already in your yard.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

What is the best kids ride-on tractor?
On build quality and parts, a Peg Perego John Deere — with the caveat that they publish almost no specifications. On documented specs, the 24V 4WD tractor with a published ~100 minute run time and a detachable loader and trailer.
Do ride-on tractor front loaders actually work?
Some do and some are molded decorations. Read the listing for “working” or “operates” against the bucket; if it only says “features a front loader”, assume cosmetic. Peg Perego and Kid Trax do them properly.
Why does Peg Perego not publish specs?
We do not know, and it is genuinely frustrating. A typical Peg Perego listing gives voltage, weight limit and age range and nothing else — no speed, run time, charge time or capacity. We print each gap as “not stated by maker” rather than estimating.
Does a trailer load count against the ride-on weight limit?
Yes. A 66 lb limit with a 50 lb child leaves 16 lb for the trailer, which is less than a child will want to carry. If hauling is the main play, buy a vehicle with real headroom.
What is zero-turn steering on a kids tractor?
Twin levers instead of a steering wheel, which is how a real zero-turn mower works. It takes practice at the younger end of the age range and is genuinely more engaging once mastered — and it mimics the machine already in your yard.
