Scores are our own editorial ratings against the published rubric on how we pick. They are not customer ratings and they are not Amazon’s.
Nine and ten is the end of this category for most children, and the honest advice is to stop looking at ride-on cars. An average nine-year-old weighs 64 lb and a ten-year-old 72 lb, with 90th percentiles around 85 and 100 lb. Against the 66 lb limits of mainstream 12V cars and the 110 to 132 lb of most 24V vehicles, the field is narrow.
What is left is genuinely good, though: 36V electric dirt bikes with 140 to 176 lb limits, go-karts with adjustable seats, and a small number of very large 24V two-seaters.
The shortlist
Three things that actually fit
36V dirt bikes. Rider limits of 133 to 176 lb, speeds from 9.9 to 17.4 mph, lithium or lead-acid packs, and real suspension. This is the category that most nine-and-ten-year-olds actually want. The crucial specification is a speed limiter — a physical key or a lockable mode — because it lets you start them at 5 to 6 mph and open it up over months rather than handing over 17 mph on day one.
Go-karts. 11 mph, adjustable seats, and a lower center of gravity than anything else here. Need a flat hard surface. The best of them state a 6-12 year range, which is the seller acknowledging this age exists.
Very large 24V two-seaters. The 220 lb vehicle on this page is the only car-shaped thing in our registry that genuinely carries two ten-year-olds. If the appeal is driving a friend around rather than going fast, this is the one.
Speed
How to introduce 15 mph safely
At 15 to 17 mph a fall is a bicycle crash. The sequence that works:
- Buy the gear with the bike. Helmet to bicycle standards, gloves, knee and elbow pads. Not later.
- Start in the lowest mode — usually 5 to 6 mph — and keep the key or the mode locked for the first several sessions.
- Pick the surface deliberately. Flat, open, no traffic, no driveway, no gravel. A grass field is kinder than a parking lot in a fall and harder work for the bike.
- Move up one mode at a time, and only once they can stop reliably at the current one.
Battery
Lithium versus lead-acid at this level
36V bikes split on chemistry, and it matters here more than anywhere else on the site. Lithium packs are markedly lighter, charge in 4 to 6 hours rather than 8 to 12, and tolerate partial charging. Lead-acid is cheaper and heavier.
For a bike a child will pick up, push and crash, the weight difference is significant. The two lithium bikes here publish 15Ah and 5.2Ah capacities, with ranges of 23.6 and 13.7 miles respectively — and range is a more useful figure than run time on a bike that is actually going somewhere. See run time and charging.
