Scores are our own editorial ratings against the published rubric on how we pick. They are not customer ratings and they are not Amazon’s.
“How to make a Power Wheels faster” is one of the most searched phrases in this category, and we would rather answer it properly than pretend it is not asked. The parts are inexpensive, the swap is within reach of anyone who can use a screwdriver, and the result is genuinely faster.
We will also tell you plainly where it goes wrong, because this is the one page on the site where the honest answer for most readers is “spend the money on a battery instead”.
The parts
RS390, RS550 and what the numbers mean
Ride-on motors are standard industrial DC units, and two appear constantly:
RS390 — the stock motor in most 12V ride-ons, typically rated around 16,000 RPM. Both repair gearboxes in our registry use it.
RS550 — physically larger and higher-revving, at 40,000 RPM in the unit we priced. This is the upgrade part.
Motors are normally sold as a matched pair with the gearbox attached, which is the right way to buy them: the usual failure is the nylon gear teeth rather than the motor itself, and the gearbox ratio has to suit the motor. Around $25 to $29 a pair.
The effect
What actually changes
Top speed rises. Going from 16,000 to 40,000 RPM through the same gearbox ratio is a large change — a 12V car at 2.5 mph can end up substantially faster.
Run time falls. Higher-revving motors draw more current, so the same battery empties sooner. Expect a meaningful reduction.
Gearbox and hub load rises. More RPM through nylon gears and plastic wheel hubs means more wear, and the hubs are the component that fails dangerously.
Torque does not improve. This is the part people get wrong. Higher RPM at the same power trades torque for speed, which means the vehicle is no better at pulling away, climbing, or crossing grass. If your complaint is “it will not move on the lawn”, this upgrade makes it worse rather than better.
When it is reasonable
The legitimate case
There is one, and it is narrow: an older child — eight or more — on a vehicle that still fits them on weight but is now too slow to be interesting, used in an enclosed flat space, with a helmet. That is a vehicle heading for the garage otherwise, and a motor swap genuinely extends its life.
If that describes your situation, buy the pair rather than a single unit so both sides match, and expect to replace the gearboxes sooner than you would have.
When it is not
Three cases where this is the wrong fix
- The child is under six. The vehicle’s speed was matched to its age range. Raising it removes that match, and there is no remote or limiter that compensates.
- It is slow on grass. You need torque and grip, not RPM. Fit EVA tires and check the motor count. See the terrain guide and rubber tire upgrades.
- It has got slow recently. That is a tired battery or a child over the weight limit, not a motor problem. See how long ride-on batteries last and weight limits.
The alternative
What we would spend it on
For roughly the same $25 to $40, a capacity upgrade gives about 70% more run time with no safety trade-off, no warranty implication and no extra wear. For most families that is a better vehicle, where a motor swap is merely a faster one.
And if the honest answer is that the child has outgrown the vehicle’s speed rather than its size, the real fix is the next class up rather than a modification — see best 24V ride-on toys and do kids outgrow ride-on toys.

The picks, in detail
Each entry below carries the same nine specifications, taken from that model’s own current listing. Rows reading not stated by maker are specs the manufacturer does not publish — we show the gap rather than filling it in.
#1 · Best stock-spec repair
8.4 / 10
12V RS390 16,000 RPM Gearbox with Motor (2-Pack)
JIARUIXIN

#ad · Price as of November 8, 2026 · how this is funded
The RS390 is the motor in most 12V ride-ons; this is a matched pair with gearboxes attached, which is how they should be replaced.
A matched pair of RS390 gearboxes at the stock 16,000 RPM. This is the repair rather than the upgrade — it restores the certified speed instead of exceeding it.

Our scoring
- Compatibility8.5
- Value9.0
- Spec disclosure7.0
- Safety9.0
What works
- Motor and gearbox as one assembly — the usual failure is the gears
- RS390 is the most common 12V ride-on motor
- Supplied as a pair so both sides match
- Stated compatibility with Power Wheels and Best Choice vehicles
What doesn’t
- 16,000 RPM is a stock-equivalent figure, not an upgrade
- Requires dismantling the drive assembly
- Gearbox tooth count not published — check against yours
#2 · The speed upgrade
7.6 / 10
weelye 12V RS550 40,000 RPM Drive Motor Gearbox (2-Pack)
weelye

#ad · Price as of November 8, 2026 · how this is funded
The RS550 at 40,000 RPM is a genuine speed upgrade over a stock RS390 — and the reason to think hard about your child's age first.
RS550 at 40,000 RPM against a stock RS390's 16,000 — a genuine performance change. It also takes the vehicle outside its certified speed, shortens run time and voids the warranty.

Our scoring
- Compatibility8.0
- Value8.5
- Spec disclosure7.0
- Safety4.5
What works
- 40,000 RPM against a stock RS390's 16,000
- Motor and gearbox supplied together as a pair
- Fits the common Jeep/SUV-style 12V platforms
- A real performance change, not a cosmetic one
What doesn’t
- Faster than the vehicle was designed and certified for
- Draws more current, so run time drops
- Voids any remaining vehicle warranty
#3 · Single-side repair
8.1 / 10
RS390 12V 16,000 RPM Motor Gearbox
ZChiMiao

#ad · Price as of November 8, 2026 · how this is funded
A single stock-spec RS390 gearbox — the right buy when only one side has failed.
One stock-spec RS390 gearbox for when only one side has failed. Mismatched wear between old and new can pull the vehicle to one side, so pairs are better where possible.

#5 · The better upgrade

12V 12Ah Sealed Lead-Acid Battery (F1 Terminal)
MLGBDC

#ad · Price as of November 8, 2026 · how this is funded
A bare 12V 12Ah AGM cell with F1 terminals — the capacity upgrade if your vehicle came with 7Ah and has room in the tray.
If the goal is a better vehicle rather than a faster one, spend the money here instead: 12Ah for under $40 is about 70% more run time with no safety trade-off.
